What to Expect with Root Canal Procedures?

Posted on 5/9/2022 by Aron Geelan, DMD
What to Expect with Root Canal Procedures?A root canal treatment helps repair and save the teeth decayed or infected. During this procedure, the dentist will remove the nerve and pulp from the infected tooth, and then the tooth's inside is cleaned and sealed. This procedure is usually performed by a dentist or endodontist specializing in this type of procedure.

When Do You Need a Root Canal Procedure?

There are a few reasons why you may need a root canal procedure. The most common reason is that the tooth has become infected. This can happen because of deep decay, frequent dental procedures are performed on the tooth, or a chip/crack in the tooth. The infection can cause pain and an abscess (a pocket of pus). There may be no pain or other symptoms in some cases, and the infection is found during a routine dental exam. If you have an infection in your tooth, it's essential to see a dentist.

What Happens in a Root Canal Procedure?

The first step in a root canal procedure is to numb the area around the tooth so that you will not feel any pain during the procedure. Next, a small hole is made in the top of the tooth so that the dentist can access the nerve and pulp for cleaning. Once the tooth is clean, they will seal it with a filling or a crown. After a root canal procedure, it is normal to feel some discomfort or even pain, which can be managed with over-the-counter medication. You may also have some swelling in the area. You can soothe it with ice packs. Take it easy for a few days after the procedure and avoid chewing on the tooth until the permanent filling or crown is installed.

If you have a root canal procedure, it is essential to take good care of your tooth. Do not wait and visit our dental clinic for regular checkups. With proper care, your tooth can last a lifetime!
