 A standard dental crown can be made out of many different materials, including porcelain, resin, ceramic, metal, and a combination of porcelain and metal. However, one of the more popular options is called a CEREC crown. These crowns are made from a durable ceramic. They are also created by a special computer program that allows us to create the dental crown right away. There is no need to wait for it to be manufactured in a lab. Because of that, many of our patients here at Geelan Dental Care opt for a CEREC crown.
What Is a CEREC Crown?
CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. CEREC crowns are designed to eliminate the wait time and the need for temporary crowns. You come in, we prepare the tooth, and then we install the permanent crown. The computer software used can take digital images of your mouth in just a few minutes. After we have this information about your tooth, we use the software to create a full 3D image of the necessary crown. After we review and approve it, this image is then sent to a special machine that creates the crown itself. Everything is done in the same appointment, so there is no need to return.
CEREC crowns are made completely of ceramic and do not have any metal in them. This allows us to carefully shade the crown so that it matches the rest of your teeth. Once placed, the CEREC crown will match the tooth in shape and color, making it very difficult for anyone to tell it is there.
Why Get a CEREC Crown?
CEREC crowns have a number of benefits over traditional crowns. Typically, the entire process of getting a CEREC crown only takes about two hours. These crowns are custom created from a digital scan of your mouth, so they are incredibly accurate and comfortable. They look very natural, too. In fact, there are very few other crown options that blend in as well as CEREC crowns. These crowns can last for years, especially if you practice good oral hygiene. There is no special aftercare for CEREC crowns that differs from traditional crowns.
CEREC crowns save time and money. You have your crown in a few hours rather than waiting for several weeks, plus you only have to pay for one appointment rather than two. Your tooth is also more protected since you will have a permanent crown on it rather than go several weeks with a temporary cap.
