Dental Implant FAQ
Portland, OR

Dentist speaking with Black couple about dental implants Geelan Dental Care in Portland, OR A dental implant is a metallic screw-like insert that replaces the root of damaged or missing teeth. The dental implant procedure involves a series of surgeries to install the implant that will serve as a solid foundation for your missing teeth. People are often intimidated by the fact that dental implants require surgeries. At Geelan Dental Care, Dr. Aron Geelan and the rest of our team are here to assure you that there is nothing to worry about. You might have lots of questions about it. We’ve answered some of our client's most frequently asked questions to help you understand what to expect.

What Happens During a Dental Implant Procedure?

Each case may be slightly different, depending on the complexity. Typically, we apply local anesthesia to numb the gum tissue in the affected area. Once it’s numb, we make a small incision in the gums and drill a tiny hole where the titanium implant will go. After placing the implant, we leave the jawbone to grow around it in a process called osseointegration. The bone grows around the implant and fuses with it to become one. Once your jaw is completely healed, we will place a crown atop the implant containing your replacement teeth.

Do I Need to Be Placed Under Anesthesia for Dental Implant Surgery?

DMD Aron Geelan and his team will examine your jawbone, and depending on the complexity of your case, decide on the most suitable anesthesia. We typically don’t need to sedate patients and only apply local anesthesia for dental implant surgery. However, we may recommend a mild sedative if you are prone to greater pain sensitivity to ensure that you’re completely comfortable during the process.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Anybody with a fully-formed jawbone requiring replacements for missing or damaged teeth can be a good candidate for dental implant surgery. You need to have a dense and healthy jawbone to successfully hold the implant tightly, but we can perform bone grafting in case your jawbone is not dense enough.

I am Pregnant But I Need Tooth Replacement. Can I Get a Dental Implant Procedure Done?

Dental implants require several surgeries and involve using sedatives and x-rays. The sedatives and x-rays present a risk to the fetus. We strongly advise waiting until after birth to get your dental implant procedure done.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants are made using titanium, which is a non-reactive metal. You do not need to worry about wear and tear on the implant. Of course, the success of the dental implant procedure depends on how well you care for your oral hygiene and overall dental health. Following all of our after-care recommendations once you get the procedure can guarantee successful results. Once your recovery is complete, you can expect the dental implant to offer a permanent solution to replace your missing teeth. Are you missing teeth or have irreparably damaged teeth? We can offer you an effective solution through a treatment plan curated to your needs.
