Here at Geelan Dental Care, we are well versed in dental implant procedures that improve the quality of life of our patients. Dental implants are titanium screws fixed into the jawbone that act as replacement tooth roots. They provide a surface on which we can mount replacement teeth. These implants provide excellent stability and provide a more natural feeling to the client. They can be used with both permanent and removable replacement teeth.

Dentures and bridges are often used to fill the gap left by an extracted tooth or teeth. They do however tend to sit uncomfortably in the gap, being supported by surrounding teeth and gums. They also often come loose and scrape against the gumline. Neighboring teeth sometimes need to be altered to better support bridges, which can be done with implant supported bridges.

WHY CHOOSE IMPLANTS

Dental implants provide a solid anchor for replacement teeth. Without loose teeth, a person becomes more comfortable opening their mouth and speaking. There is less fear that something will fall out or slip. Those that make the upgrade to implants often find their speech becomes less slurred. There is also greater confidence when it comes to eating out. With no risk of dentures moving about and allowing food particles to get underneath and bother due to implant-supported dentures, people become more confident and better enjoy themselves with others.

Being able to smile more naturally and confidently is great for boosting self-esteem and makes a person appear more attractive. With less irritation to the gums and lower risk of food particles and bacteria getting in, there is improved dental health. Since neighboring teeth need not be interfered with to provide support, there is less chance of weakening. With replacement teeth being individually fitted onto implants, there is also better access to the space between teeth during brushing and flossing. These implants are also highly durable and can last a lifetime with good care.

HOW IT WORKS

To get dental implants, one must have healthy gums and strong enough bone to support the implant. If the bone is weak, a bone graft may be done. Any infection to the gum tissue must also be treated and fully healed before implantation. Commitment to good oral hygiene is also expected. Those who have a smoking habit are advised to stop before undertaking such treatment. Our team assesses each case on its merit to devise a suitable treatment plan.

The main procedure involves fixing the titanium screw into the jawbone socket. As the bone heals from this, it grows and hardens around the post, ensuring firm anchorage. This process can take up to 3-4 months. Once that is done, another component is added, called an abutment. The replacement tooth or dental crown will be fixed onto this part. We will use an impression of your teeth to create a suitable replacement tooth to fill the gap. It will be appropriately aligned, and color matched to ensure a natural appearance.

IMPLANT RESTORATION

Dental implants have numerous benefits over more traditional restorations. In short, an implant-supported restoration will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. Whether we use porcelain or zirconia, most people will not realize you have a restoration!

Implant restorations are also more comfortable and convenient. You will be able to eat your favorite foods without having to worry about embarrassing slips or gum irritation. You can also maintain your restoration as you would your natural teeth, with regular brushing, flossing, and appointments.

Dental implants are a highly specialized procedure that our team has carried out on multiple occasions. To find out what treatment plan is best suited for you contact Geelan Dental Care on (503) 223-1322 and make an appointment today.
